Assalaamu ‘Aleykum waRahmatullaahi waBarakaatuh,
I wanted to share with you all an experience I had today which moved me deeply.
A sister asked me to teach her 5 year old son hifdh-ul-Qur’aan (memorisation of the Qur’aan) and I just had my first class with this gifted child today. His name is Ismaa’eel and is of Asian/Turkish-Cypriot background. He doesn’t know how to read Arabic nor does he speak or understand the language but subhaanallaah, at his tender age, by the Blessing of Allaah and then his mother’s hard work, he has memorised the whole of Juz ‘Amma, maashaAllaah.
I always hear stories about young children of his age who have memorised the whole Qur’aan with Tajweed also but have never met one in person. Ismaa’eel is like any child his age, naughty and noisy with a very short attention span. But unlike most kids his age, he has an amazing love for the Qur’aan. Everytime I told him to take a 5 minute break, he would say, no lets carry on with more Qur’aan. At the end of the lesson, he said to me that he loves Surah ar-Rahmaan and wants to memorize all of it (he has already learnt about a third, simply from repeatedly listening to its recitation from tapes). He asked me to recite it to him and as I did so, he began to cry profusely and breathing heavily. I had no idea what was happening and thought he was feeling some pain. So I stopped to ask him what was wrong and he told me to continue and so I did, and he continued to cry with his head buried in his hands. When I finished, I asked him again what the matter was and he replied saying, “These are Allaah’s Words and they are so beautiful.” Subhaanallaah. This is coming from a small 5 year old child. He doesn’t understand a word of what he is hearing but something in his heart knew what Allaah’s words were and the power and might they carried to the point that it made him cry. I felt so ashamed at myself and wondered how many times I weeped to such an extent when remembering Allaah. We are much older than Ismaa’eel, understand the Qur’aan much more than he does and have more knowledge of the deen than him but yet our hearts are so hard that Allaah’s words do not move us as He says in the Qur’aan
Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful Message in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, (yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah’s praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide. [az-Zumar 39:23]
And He also says about the mountains, which have no heart to comprehend with:
Had We sent down this Qur’an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect [al-Hashr 59:21]
Let us all take a lesson from Ismaa’eel and hasten to learn, memorise and IMPLEMENT the Qur’aan before the day when no wealth or children will avail except he who meets Allaah with a sound heart.
Allaahuma! Make us from the people of the Qur’aan in this Dunyaa and the Aakhirah. Allaahuma! Instill within our hearts the love of the Qur’aan and direct us to its recitation by night and day! Allaahuma! Enrich us with Knowledge, adorn us with Humility, enoble us with Taqwaa and beautify us with good Health. Aameen.
Wassalli-llaahumma ‘alaa nabiyyinaa Muhammad wa ‘alaa aalihee wa sahbihee wasallim.
Umm ‘Aaishah
