As we approach the blessed month of Ramadan full of mercy, forgiveness, and protection from the hellfire among other bountiful openings from Allah ta’ala. I often wonder why we place so much emphasis on the Tarweeh prayer. At a a quick glance in thebooks in the shafi’i madhhab like matn abu shuja it says the stressed nafl are mentioned to be three: salatul layl, salatul duha, and salatul tarweeh. In the maqasid Imam Nawawi mentions tarweeh with the other recommended salah after the additional prayers after the stressed sunnah after the fard prayer . Many hold on to salatul tarweeh as being fard holding fast to narrations by our beloved prophet (sall Allahu alahi wa sallam) he (sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said :
213. Chapter: The recommendation to pray at night in Ramadan – that is the tarawih prayers
1187. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Anyone who prays in Ramadan motivated by belief and in expectation of the reward will be forgiven his past wrong actions.” [Agreed upon]
1188. Abu Hurayra said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to encourage prayer at night in Ramadan although he did not command people to do it as a obligatory duty. He would say, ‘Anyone who prays in Ramadan motivated by belief and in expectation of the reward will be forgiven all his past wrong actions.'” [Muslim]
Not to belittle Tarweeh prayer in anyway. The scholars have told us of its great and tremendous virute and reward. But we shouldn’t lose sight of the big picture. The picture being praying fajr, dhur,(salatul jumu’ah on friday),asr, maghrib, and isha in a timely manner . If we are missing or lax in our 5 daily salat our emphasis shouldn’t be on Tarweeh prayer but focusing on the 5 daily prayer an getting them right before Allah ta’ala inshaa Allah. As a means to getting closer to Allah seeking the divine pleasure of Allah ta’ala.
