Obejective of Fasting

The aim in fasting is to oppose (break) your appetites (desires) and to double your capacity for works of Taqwa . If, then, you eat food equal to what has passed from you, you have thereby made up for what has passed from you and there is no advantage in your fast, while in addition you find your stomach oppressive . There is no vessel more hateful to God than a stomach full of lawful food. What then if what fills it is unlawful?

So when you have understood what it means to fast, do so as much as you can , for it’s the foundation of devotional practices and the key of good works. The Messenger of God (sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said “God most high said ‘Every good deed is rewarded by ten to seven- hundred like deeds, except fasting , for that is Mine and I Myself reward it”.

Bidaya Al-Hidaya (The Beginning of Guidance)

Imam Ghazali pg 51 translation by Mashhad Al-Allaf
